Piece of Cake Ball

The other day was Bunco night at Alpha Mom’s house – it was a potluck. The last bunco night I brought chocolate whiskey balls. They turned out pretty good and the ladies seemed to like them. I was telling my SIL, Madlib, about them and how I was cracking “Shweddy Ball” and “Chocolate Salty Balls” jokes all night. I’m a dork, what can I say. So anyway, she suggested that I make Cake Balls for the next bunco nights potluck, to keep with the theme. I looked up the recipe on the internet – looked easy enough, so I decided, what-the-heck, I would make them instead of the blueberry crumble that I had planned on making.
Here’s my photo cake ball making effort:

As per directed on All Recipes.com, I prepared the cake mix according to the package directions:
Cake Mix
When the cake was done, I crumble it while it was hot into a large bowl,
Cake Crumble
I stirred in the chocolate frosting using a blender (while it was hot) until it was well blended and basically looked like mud.
Cake Crumble with Frosting
I used a melon baller to form balls of the chocolate cake/frosting mixture.
Naked Cake Balls
Melt chocolate coating in a glass bowl in the microwave, or in a metal bowl over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth. Dip the balls in chocolate using a toothpick or fork to hold them. Place on waxed paper to set.
Okay, no photos for this process because this is where I hit a bit of a snafu. I opted to use the double boiler method and well, let’s just say things got a little sticky. Or messy. Or even, Oh my God, why the hell did I decided to do these bloody balls! And yes, I cursed Madlib for suggesting them. There was chocolate dripping everywhere – hot chocolate dripping down my fork and onto my hands as I madly twirl for even coverage. Chunks of cake was breaking off into the melted chocolate and if I took the chocolate from the heat so that my hands would stop frying, it would cool making the coating process impossible. Balls!

But, this was my end result:

Fifteen complete balls. I started at 11:00 AM and finished 15 balls by 6:00 PM. The party was at 7.
The carrot cake balls with cream cheese frosting and white chocolate shell where never finished – they’re still sitting in my fridge. It may have been the four kids, that’s my three (Bailey’s at summer school) and Little Man, plus a shower, hair and make-up at four while my balls cooled, that made the process take longer – but I don’t think so. I think they were just a pain in the butt. It might also be that I really suck at stuff like this, but try really, really hard because I don’t want to be the one that brings the crappy looking or tasting stuff. Did I mention that one of Alpha Mom’s friends is a professional chief and that she would be there that night? No? Yeah, no pressure.

Surprisingly, they tasted really good! That would be the blood, sweat and tears . . . with a dash of bitter cursing.

If you want to give it a whirl, you can find the recipe at Cake Balls: AllRecipes.com. Good luck!

P.S. If you don’t have as much trouble as I did, I don’t want to hear about it.
